Getting Started

Setup & Installation

Each sensor module ships with a magnetic mounting bracket that attaches to the inside wall of a standard Langstroth or top-bar hive body. No drilling, screwing, or permanent modifications required. Installation takes about two minutes per hive — slide the bracket into position and let the magnets hold it in place. The thermal probe extends into the brood nest area via a thin flexible cable.

No. Our sensors are designed to be colony-neutral. The modules produce no vibration, emit no light, and generate minimal heat (under 0.3°C above ambient). Field tests across 800+ hives showed no measurable difference in colony behavior, brood patterns, or honey production between monitored and unmonitored hives.

BeeSwarmly sensors work with Langstroth (8-frame and 10-frame), top-bar, Warre, and Flow Hive designs. The magnetic bracket adapts to wall thicknesses between 19mm and 38mm. For non-standard hive bodies, we offer a universal adhesive mount as an alternative.

No. Sensors communicate via LoRa radio to a gateway unit that can be up to 2km away. The gateway needs either WiFi, Ethernet, or cellular (built-in LTE-M modem) to push data to the cloud. Many beekeepers place the gateway at their home or barn and cover remote apiaries with a single unit.

Predictions

How Swarm Detection Works

Our current model achieves 91% accuracy across validated field tests. That means for every 100 swarm events, the system correctly identifies 91 of them at least 48 hours in advance. The false-positive rate is under 6%, meaning you won’t be overwhelmed with false alarms.

The median lead time is 72 hours. In practice, alerts range from 48 to 96 hours depending on colony size, ambient temperature, and how suddenly conditions change. You’ll receive an initial “watch” notification followed by escalating alerts as confidence increases.

Three primary data streams feed the prediction model: thermal mapping (temperature at multiple points inside the hive body), acoustic analysis (frequency spectrum of colony vibrations), and weight tracking (continuous hive weight via the scale platform). Secondary inputs include ambient temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and time-of-year seasonality factors.

Yes. While swarm prediction is the primary feature, the sensor data also flags potential queenlessness (via acoustic signature changes), robbing events (via sudden weight drops and acoustic spikes), and overheating. These supplementary alerts are included with every subscription tier.

Plans

Pricing & Subscriptions

The sensor hardware starts at $89 per hive module. The monitoring platform runs on a subscription: the Hobbyist tier (up to 10 hives) is $12/month, and the Commercial tier (unlimited hives) is $39/month. Both include swarm prediction, supplementary alerts, data export, and dashboard access. We offer a 30-day free trial of the platform with any hardware purchase.

Yes. Every hardware purchase includes 30 days of full platform access at no additional cost. You can also explore the dashboard in demo mode (with sample data from our test apiaries) before purchasing any hardware.

Absolutely. There are no long-term contracts. You can cancel your platform subscription at any time and your sensors will continue to log data locally. If you re-subscribe later, historical data will sync back to the cloud automatically.

Data

Privacy & Security

You do. Period. Your sensor data is yours to export, share, or delete at any time. We never sell individual hive data to third parties. With your opt-in consent, anonymized and aggregated data may be used for research purposes to improve swarm prediction models for the community.

Yes. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). The LoRa link between sensors and gateway uses device-level encryption keys that are unique to your hardware. Cloud infrastructure runs on ISO 27001–certified hosting.
